As feria season approaches women all over Andalusia begin to prepare their flamenco dress or traje de flamenca. Feria season typically lasts from April to September. During this time cities throughout southern Spain are filled with flamenco fashion, music, and festivities as they celebrate their annual fair. Women tend to own numerous flamenco dresses (I personally own six) so they can wear a different one each day of the fair…or at least that’s why I have so many! 😉
Some women design or purchase a new dress every year. The desire to stay on top of the latest trends has lead to the creation of several prominent moda flamenca events, including the Pasarela Flamenca Jerez. This year I had the chance to return to the Pasarela Flamenca and experience flamenco’s 2018 fashion trends first hand.
The Pasarela Flamenca Jerez is hosted at the beautiful González Byass Winery. Anyone can enter the exhibition area for free and you’ll find lots of flamenco inspired clothing and artisan accessories. Learn more about the exhibition area in this blog post.
If you want to see the fashion shows you can check the event program for the list of designers and the time of each show. Tickets for each designer are available online or at the event (I would recommend getting tickets ahead of time because they can sell out). Make sure to arrive 30 minutes before the show—a huge line forms at the entrance!
Flamenco fashion trends
Last year I saw lots of floral prints, large polka dots (the traditional Andalusian style), voluminous ruffles, and black and red color combinations. This year I noticed more soft color tones, mini polka dots, and chiffon accents dominating the runway. Check out my favorite dresses below from the fashion shows and find inspiration for your flamenco dress this year!
