As Spain begins to open its doors to tourists once again, some of my favorite restaurants in Sanlúcar de Barrameda are opening their doors too! Most people have heard about the classics like Casa Bigote, Barbiana and Casa Balbino…but Sanlúcar’s gastronomic scene offers a plethora of delicious destinations. Below you’ll find 10 restaurants (in no particular order) I recommend trying next time you’re in town. Don’t forget to make a reservation at these establishments if you’re visiting during summer or on a weekend.
If you have additional restaurant recommendations you think I should try, leave me a comment below. 😉
Veranillo de Santa Ana
I never knew I was a fan of arroz negro (seafood rice tinted black with cuttlefish ink)…that is until I tried it at Veranillo. You can’t go wrong ordering anything off the menu here, but it would be a shame to leave without trying one of their spectacular paella-style rices. Keep in mind you’ll need to order rice per person (i.e. arroz para dos) and the rations are large; if we’re a group of four people, we usually order rice for two—that way we’ll have enough room for other dishes.
My favorite dishes:
- Atún rojo marinado
- Arroz negro con carabinero
- Arroz del señorito
- Ropa vieja de corvina
- Pulpo a la brasa
Location: Calle Manuel Hermosilla, 2, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz 11540

Restaurante El Espejo
Located in Barrio Alto, next to the gorgeous Posada de Palacio Hotel and Palacio de Orleans-Borbón, El Espejo offers an elevated dining experience in an intimate setting. I highly recommend reserving a table in the charming, Andalusian patio and choosing one of their multi-course tasting menus. Chef Jose Luis is constantly updating the restaurant’s menu to include exciting new dishes that incorporate fresh, local ingredients. El Espejo has collected a long list of awards and achievements—most recently it was awarded the Bib Gourmand and made the Michelin Guide for the second year in a row.
My favorite dishes:
- Tartar de atún con ajo blanco
- Pijotas fritas en tempura
- Croquetas de puchero
- Corvina en salsa cítricos
- Pescado de mercado
- Carrillera de ternera
- Costilla glaseada con puré de cebollino
- Canelón de ternera retinta
- Lingote de cochinillo

Doña Calma Gastrobar
If you’re a tuna lover you can’t miss Doña Calma. This restaurant is run by the same family as Veranillo, so you know the food is going to be great. When I eat at Doña Calma I try to order as much almadraba tuna as possible, or atún rojo as it’s known here. This top-quality, blue-fin tuna is caught in several coastal towns in Cadiz. 80% of the almadraba tuna is exported to Japan to make sushi and sashimi. Take advantage of this local delicacy and order your share right here in Sanlúcar.
My favorite dishes:
- Ensalada de aguacates
- Ensalada de solomillo de atún rojo
- Ensaladilla de gambas
- Tartar or tataki de atún rojo de almadraba
- Taco Doña Calma (with tuna or prawns – either one is great)
- Ropa vieja de corvina
- Risotto verde

Restaurante Entrebotas
You’ll find Entrebotas tucked away, quite literally ‘between barrels’ in the beautiful patio of Bodegas Hidalgo la Gitana (La Gitana winery). I love the vibe of this restaurant inside and out—especially their outdoor seating area surrounded by bougainvillea and the smell of manzanilla. Check out the winery’s “Entrebotas Experience’—a quick sherry tasting and bodega tour followed by a meal in the restaurant. Entrebotas also offers multi-course menus for larger groups and special events.
My favorite dishes:
- Chicharrones de chiclana con cream
- Carpaccio de presa
- Croquetas de puchero
- Alcachofas a la brasa
- Arroz seco de gambones
- Pierna de cordero a la brasa

Trasiego
Trasiego is one of my favorite restaurants in the city center. The service is great and I love the ambience inside the restaurant as well as out in the plaza. They offer the perfect mix of modern dishes and local seafood, so there’s something for everyone. When you eat here check the blackboards for fresh, off-the-menu items. Keep in mind you can’t make a reservation at Trasiego, but if you show up right when they open you shouldn’t have an issue getting a table.
My favorite dishes:
- Fresh seafood – choco frito, coquinas, acedías, tapaculo, bacalao, gambas, etc.
- Ensaladilla de pulpo y gambas
- Tomato verde frito
- Provolone fundido
- Solomillo de atún al queso viejo

La Lobera
La Lobera is a favorite amongst tourists and locals alike. The head chef and owner, Paco Lobo, provides a modern flare on traditional Sanluqueñan cuisine. You’ll have your choice of quality meat as well as fish—and the menu is constantly updated to incorporate local, seasonal ingredients. If you eat here make sure to reserve a table outside on the covered terrace.
My favorite dishes:

Restaurante Mirador de Doñana
Mirador de Doñana is located in Bajo de Guia, a stone’s throw from the water and Doñana National Park. I always make a reservation to eat on the terrace, but if it’s windy or cold they’ve also got a beautiful dining room upstairs with large windows and great views. If you’re in the mood for a quick bite, sit at the barrels on the terrace and order from the tapas menu.
My favorite dishes:
- Gratín de bogavante
- Ensalada wakame de atún rojo
- Atún cuatro texturas
- Piononos de bacalao
Location: Avenida Bajo de Guía, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz 11540

You’ll find Puerta de la Victoria situated just off Sanlúcar’s town square, the Plaza del Cabildo. This restaurant features ample outdoor seating and an abundant mix of traditional tapas and modern Spanish cuisine. You usually don’t need a reservation if you show up before the lunch and dinner rush (2:30pm / 10:00pm). We order a round of cold draft beers and a selection of tapas every time we go.
